So tomorrow I have a phone interview with another oil field service company. Apparently I say things I’m never going to do, then do them.

Just like my old job (another restaurant), I told my self I never work in another restaurant. I’ve been at my current restaurant almost a year now and love it. What did I learn? The co-workers male a huge difference, my current job is like a 2nd home and co-workers are like close family. If you land this job I could change your opinion of the industry.

Well, let’s hope that works.
I did say I’d never: buy a car site unseen off the internet, did that; buy a red car, did that; go after a coworker, did that; go after one of my sister’s friends, check; be on unemployment, check.

My coworkers were awesome. It was the job that was terrible. 12 hour shifts, alternating between days and nights, out in the middle of nowhere Texas. Also working for a service company sucks, they’re all more or less the same.

I got laid off from an oil field service company over the summer and made a big deal about being done with NoDak and coming home...
last week I got called by my former boss asking if I wanted to return and run my department.... I’m definitely considering it.
I have a feeling 2017 is going to be like 2011 all over again out there

I don’t mind long days, I rather be busy then bored. I can see how alternating days & nights get to you.

I got laid off in April, I doubt I’d get called back. At this point I would take the job again. I’m hoping it either booms again, or I get a job somewhere else. That money is hard to pass up.

Yes it is, I’m young (early 20s) and I’ve budgeted out if I went back for 2 years at my old job I could move back home and buy a house for cash... I’m already debt free... with no roots tying me down I don’t think I can pass up that opportunity

You know what they say: money talks and petroleum pays. Doubtful you will get paid half as much as a chemical engineer in a traditional engineering job. Good luck!

I know you’re hesitant but if you get this job you can still look for another job. Much less stressful to look for a job when you’re employed!

Work is work, provided it isn’t making you miserable it’s worth a shot. People rarely end up in the job they imagined they’d be in.

In that case maybe reconsider, or like others said, immediately apply for other stuff and just use it as a stop gap.

I’ve got three other calls this week, so I wouldn’t take it unless I don’t get anything else.

Ian it even possible to be happy doing field service? Even at my last company, where it was a screaming sweet place to work with fun and interesting projects, field service really got the shaft with crappy stuff they had to deal with.

I have never understood people who lament not working, complain about having to make personal sacrifices due to lack of work, and then turn down jobs.

In your similar post yesterday, you said you wouldn’t work for $30 an hour since it would be a large pay cut from your previous job. The other way to look at it is that it would be a large increase from not making any money. Just a different mentality. I have a kid, if I found myself in a position where I was desperate for work, I would mow lawns or work at the 7-11 if it meant food on the table.

Well, I’m not looking at those jobs plus I’ve basically excluded myself from those jobs because of my previous compensation. What would have been the more correct response to that would be, I’m not moving to some place new to take that job. Right now I’m with my parents living rent free, if I could get a job making $30/hr and live at home, I’d take it no problem and continue job searching. I also haven’t turned any jobs down. I know I’m going to take a pay cut, I’m fine with that it’s just I’d rather find a job I want to stay at as opposed to one that I’m going to bolt from the second I get a better opportunity.

Well I know you were in need of a job and maybe this one won’t make you miserable like the last. Was it the work you were doing miserable or the atmosphere?

Combination of everything. The schedule was rough, plus once oil prices tanked we were all worried about getting laid off, I also felt like I could never escape work since all my friends down there worked for the same company.

Oh, yeah that sounds like a weird way to work. I love my coworkers, but thank god I don’t see them all the time. I also couldn’t imagine working for a job where I am afraid all the time of being laid off.

It’s hard to make friends when you have such an erratic schedule, so you make friends with people that have that same schedule. It really wasn’t too bad, I mean we were all young engineers, who pretty much all liked to drink. However, you got enough of us together and all we’d talk about was work. It’s no fun to be constantly stressed about losing your job.
